Bio/History:
Pullman's Palace Car Co. founder and president George M. Pullman died October 19, 1897. Under the terms of his will Norman B. Ream and Robert T. Lincoln were appointed executors of the estate, which by 1900 was valued at $17,500,000.

Numerous copies of printed material used for informational, promotional or advertising purposes. Employee handbooks and instructional guides, including a step by step manual for handling, preparing and serving food. Menus. Reports written on many differenct aspects of the company and the Pullman car. Articles and news clippings pertaining to the company, the train cars and their uses. Information on the model town of Pullman. Business materials include the charter, by-laws, forms, letters, and contracts, some with specific train lines. Numerous drawings, designs and blueprints for the cars and a box of color samples used for painting the cars. The bound volumes include: Ground Plans of the Cars, The Pullman Company Operating Department Catalog Material and Supplies, July 1923 and Lot Book(Pullman Cars Built), 1899-1934.

Bio/History:
Chicago architect, avid historian of the railroad passenger trains, and author of books on the history of railroad passenger trains and specifically the Pullman car. The Pullman company was founded in 1867 by George Pullman, who built the company into the predominant railroad car company in the United States during the golden age of train travel.

descriptionCorrespondence (primarily 1859-1863), diary (1859-1861), collection of railroad passes (ca. 205, 1862-1900), and obituaries and resolutions in memorial of Pullman. Correspondence is chiefly letters by Pullman to his mother and other family members on personal matters and on his work. The letters originate from Colorado, Chicago (Ill.), and elsewhere. Collection also includes letters (20 items, 1893 June 21-Oct. 11) from Mr. Fritsch, manager of the Pullman Exhibit at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893; account sheet for showing a party of five around the fair; and a printed flyer for "Railway Day," Sept. 16th. Oversize items about Pullman Island (N.Y.) also are present in collection.

Includes a Pullman letter (n.d.) to Conductors, Pullman Palace Car Company, introducing his friend Gen. Frederick A. Starring, who is making a brief tour in the West. Requests that Starring's journey be made comfortable and that whatever accommodations he may request be provided free.

Note: Transcripts of many items are located in Liston Leyendecker's research notes on Pullman.

descriptionPrimarily portraits of George Pullman, his family and relatives. Most of the photographs are formally posed group portraits taken outdoors on the grounds surrounding Castle Rest, the Pullman summer estate on Pullman Island located in the Thousand Islands in the St. Lawrence Seaway near Alexandria Bay, N.Y. Also includes interior and exterior views of Castle Rest, as well as Camp Royal and other buildings on the island. A few images show Fairlawn, another Pullman residence in Elbion, N.J.; unidentified groups in carriages outside homes on Prairie Avenue in Chicago; and interior and exterior views of Pullman's private railroad car.

Biographical note:
Industrialist George Mortimer Pullman founded the Pullman Palace Car Company. Florence Sanger Pullman Lowden, daughter of George Mortimer Pullman, married Illinois Governor Frank Orren Lowden in 1896. Florence Lowden Miller, daughter of Frank Orren Lowden and Florence Sanger Pullman Lowden, married Dr. Charles Phillip Miller in 1931. Family members include George and Harriet Pullman and their children George, Jr., Walter, Harriet (Schermerhorn), and Florence (Lowden); Florence and Frank O. Lowden and their children George, Harriet, Frances, and Florence (Miller); Florence and Dr. C. Phillip Miller and their children Warren and Phillip.

Dr. C. Phillip Miller was a descendant of the Samuel Pebbles family (or "Peebles" as it was called until 1856, when the spelling was changed). Mr. Miller’s grandfather, Alonzo Warren Pebbles, owned a paint store and was a prominent citizen in Oak Park, Illinois

(Minton) Pullman, primarily letters from her children on personal and family matters while they were at school in the 1860s and 1870s and during the later years of her life. Plus other letters, clippings, etc., of and about her children: Frank, Royal, Helen, Emma, James, George, and Albert. Includes approximately 75 Frank Pullman letters with his mother and others; also random items on the Minton family and their genealogy. Includes Alice C. Minton's letter (1871 Oct. 22, 4 p.) to Frank W. Pullman, in which she describes family experiences during the Great Chicago fire of 1871, notes that Mayor Ogden's house is the only one standing on the north side of the city, and that Col. Wood opened his Globe Theater last night. Encloses her Oct. 1st letter (4 p.) on routine personal and family matters.

descriptionPapers of Madeline Wallin Sikes including correspondence, notes, minutes, monographs, reports, recommendations, handbills, newsclippings, notes and poems concerning her activities in women's organizations and Chicago political activities, notably the League of Cook County Clubs, the National Consumer's League, the Chicago Child Saving League, the League of Women Voters, the Woman's Club of Austin, the General Federation of Women's Clubs, the American Collegiate Association, the Chicago Woman's Club, and the Illinois Congress of Mothers. The papers contain a significant amount of material on her work with educational legislation, child labor legislation, and protective labor legislation for women.

Sundry letters and other items of George Cushing Sikes from the Chicago Record, plus a few papers of his daughter Eleanor Sikes Peters. Sikes's letter of July 24, 1894 concerns George M. Pullman and the Pullman strike and mentions Jane Addams: his Feb. 29, 1896 letter deals with Miss Addam's efforts to have him run for Alderman against John Powers.
