description | The letters contain discussions of sale prices and commissions; exhibitions at the Clausen galleries; the packing, transport, and delivery of art works (many of them portraits); and the design and manufacture of frames, as Clausen apparently made frames as well. Among the 90 artists represented, several were prominent portraitists and landscape painters of their time, including Emil Carlsen, Henry Mosler, John Francis Murphy, Walter L. Palmer, Henry R. Poore, and Irving R. Wiles. Biographical and Historical Notes William Clausen established his galleries in New York City in 1889, in part to encourage American collectors to buy works by American artists. |
