descriptionThe Nancy Wilson Ross Papers, 1913-86, contain virtually complete documentation of her professional writing career, extensive personal correspondence, and files reflecting her interest in Far Eastern culture.

Types of materials found in the collection include holograph manuscript notes; typed manuscripts, carbons, and photocopies; photographs; galley and page proofs; contracts and royalty statements; book announcements; dust jackets; publicity clippings; correspondence; pencil, ink, and watercolor sketches; reports; exhibit announcements and catalogs; newspaper clippings; and periodical publications. Early drafts and working manuscripts of books,

(cont.) an unpublished first novel, short stories, poetry, articles, and reviews, along with supplementary correspondence document her writing career. Her works deal with numerous topics, among them, the Pacific Northwest, the Bauhaus, and Asian culture and religion. Extensive correspondence with family, friends, and numerous other associates is present. Correspondence, organization records, and publications represent Ross's participation on various boards, such as the Asia Society, the Martha Graham Foundation, the San Francisco Zen Center, and the Tibetan Foundation.

descriptionWeinstein describes his early years as a professional working under Donald H. Elliott for John V. Lindsay's mayoral campaign and later in the mayor's Urban Design Group. He candidly discusses his association with the Museum in planning and implementing the sale of its air rights in 1977 which enabled the Museum to initiate its 1984 Expansion Project and he comments on his relationships with those involved, such as Donald H. Elliott, Richard H. Koch, Donald B. Marron, William S. Paley, Blanchette H. Rockefeller, and David Rockefeller. He describes the steps taken, the choice of architect, the involvement of public and private entities in the. process, and comments upon the ultimate product.

descriptionKoch recalls his early days as a writer/director of industrial films and as an associate with the law firm of Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam & Roberts, where he worked on Museum of Modern Art matters. He discusses the 1958 fire at the Museum, the legal ramifications of which resulted in his being hired full-time, and describes changes in the structure of trustee committees as well as his own various responsibilities. Koch offers personal reminiscences of Alfred H. Barr, Jr., Rene d'Harnoncourt, John B. Hightower, Bates Lowry, and Monroe Wheeler, and discusses in depth the period in the 1960s during which he, J. Wilder Green and Walter Bareiss assumed joint responsibility for the administration of the Museum. Also discussed are the Museum's 1964 building expansion, the planning phase of the 1984 expansion, the formation of the Museum's professional staff union (PASTA/MoMA), and the employee strikes of the early 1970s.
