descriptionInterviews conducted by Bowman (Ruth Gurin at the time of the interviews) with Ilya Bolotowsky, Rosalind Bengelsdorf Browne, Burgoyne Diller (reel 3418), John Ferren, Carl Robert Holty, Harry Holtzman, Ibram Lassaw, Jacques Lipschitz (reel 4210), Alice Trumbull Mason, George McNeil, George L.K. Morris, and Ad Reinhardt, as background for Gurin's M. A. thesis (NYU) on the American Abstract Artists.

Bolowtowsky speaks of the American Abstract Artists; the Concretionists; the attitudes of the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Museum of Modern Art in the 1930s; suprematism and neo-plasticism; color and texture; financing and installing AAA exhibitions; and WPA mural projects. He recalls Byron Browne, Willem de Kooning, Burgoyne Diller, Gertrude Greene, Harry Holtzman, George McNeil, George L.K. Morris, Albert Swinden and others.

In the Diller interview, subjects include the formation of the American Abstract Artists, early exhibits, studying at the Art Students League, and his work on a WPA mural project. He recalls Katherine Dreier, Jackson Pollock, Arshile Gorky, Piet Mondrian.

Art historian; New York, N.Y. Bowman received her M.A. from NYU, and later worked as guest curator at the University's Grey Art Gallery and conducted art related interviews for the WNYU and for the Archives of American Art.

descriptionUntranscribed taped interviews, 30 to 60 minutes in length, of painters, sculptors, and printmakers. The interviews were conducted and recorded by Fortess of the School of Fine and Applied Arts, Boston University, in part, under a contract with the Office of Education, U.S. Dept. of Health, Education, and Welfare. Fortess' Final Report on the project, June 1968, summarizes the objective was "to develop a library of taped interviews with contemporary American painters, sculptors, and graphic artists, such interviews to be concerned with questions of technical, professional and personal interest."

Among the interviewees are Kenneth Armitage, Will Barnet, Romare Bearden, George Biddle, James Brooks, Adolph Dehn, Jane Freilicher, Julian Levi, Alice Neel, Larry Rivers, Moses Soyer, Dorothy Varian, and many others.

Fortess was a painter and printmaker, b. 1907 in Belgium. [Fortess died in 1993.]
