Papers document the life of John Graham, born Ivan Dombrowsky, through personal documents related to military service and family history, passports, artifacts, correspondence, appointment books, financial records, inventories, wills, extensive writings and notes, books, clippings, exhibition catalogs, photographs of Graham and his family and friends, and artwork created and collected by Graham.

acquisition informationThe papers of John Graham were given to the Archives of American Art in five separate accessions between 1985 and 1988. The bulk of papers were donated by Graham's son, John David Graham, in 1985, with later additions from Patricia Graham, the widow of John David Graham, in 1986, 1987, and 1988, via the Andre Emmerich Gallery, Inc. The Department of Prints and Drawings of the Museum of Modern Art donated more papers and loaned additional materials for microfilming in 1986.

descriptionThe James Joyce collection formed by Mr. John J. Slocum consists of letters to, by and about Joyce, manuscripts of his writings, clippings, photographs, printed books and pamphlets. The collection is described in A Bibliography of James Joyce by John J. Slocum and Herbert Cahoon, New Haven, Yale University Press, 1953. The Slocum Joyce collection was acquired by Yale in 1951. A part of it was given by Eileen and John J. Slocum; the remainder was given by Edwin J. Beinecke, '07, and Frederick W. Beinecke, '09S. No record was kept of which portion was given by which donor. Subsequent additions to the Joyce collection have been made by purchase, and by gift from John Hay Whitney, Mrs. Herbert Gorman, Herbert Cahoon, and other friends of the Library. The sources of these additions are noted in the register. The manuscript of "Exiles" is the gift of Mrs. Milton Erlanger.

descriptionThe records of the New York City gallery James Graham & Sons measure 103.6 linear feet and date from 1815, 1821, circa 1896-2011 (bulk 1950s-1980s). The collection generally documents the gallery's contemporary art department during the time in which Robert Claverhouse Graham, Sr. worked at the gallery (1940-1979); records prior to 1954 are sparse and scattered. Gallery records include artist files; correspondence; exhibition files; financial records; inventory records; printed materials; sales, loans, and consignment records; scrapbooks; and photographic materials. Also found are records from Coe Kerr Gallery regarding exhibitions.

The collection is an invaluable resource in tracing the provenance of particular works of art and provides a comprehensive view of the activities of collectors and art dealers in the years leading up to and following World War II.
