acquisition informationThe Diaries of Robert Sterling Clark were transferred to the Director's Vault at the Clark Art Institute some time after Clark's death in 1956. The June, 2010 accrual of diary entries dating from February-May 1948 were stored in the office of Miner Crary and acquired by J. Dinsmore Adams, Jr. Additional diary entries acquired by the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute from J. Dinsmore Adams, Jr. in June, 2010.

The collection includes extensive correspondence files, reference material on American and European collectors and their collections, inventory and stock records, financial records, exhibition files, auction files, and the records of subsidiary companies. The collection is an invaluable resource in tracing the provenance of particular works of art and provides a comprehensive view of the activities of collectors and art dealers in the years leading up to and following World War II.

acquisition informationThe records of the Paris and New York art dealer Jacques Seligmann & Co., Inc., were donated to the Archives of American Art in 1978 by Mrs. Ethlyne Seligman, widow of Germain Seligman. A small addition of 19 linear feet was donated in 1994.

descriptionThese papers of Fogg Museum directors John Coolidge and Agnes Mongan document their administration of the museum and related professional activities. Most of Coolidge's papers were created during his administration, from 1948 to 1968; most of Mongan's papers are from her tenure as acting director and then director (1968 to 1971). The papers consist primarily of correspondence, including Coolidge's correspondence with art dealers, and also include photographs, memoranda, reports, meeting minutes, blueprints, printed material, letters of recommendation, page proofs, financial documents, sketches, and grant proposals.

accessAccess to most of the papers is unrestricted. Access to files containing information on personnel matters, student academic records and other materials deemed confidential is restricted. These restrictions are noted at the file level.
