titleRosenbach Company Photograph album, ca.1940s-1950s?
repositoryThe Winterthur Library
descriptionAn album of ca.160 photographs of antique furniture, portraits, lighting fixtures, tapestries, china and pottery, pewter, sculpture, a bird cage, a doll house, and other objets d’art offered for sale by the Rosenbach Company.

(A few books appear in some of the photos, more as props than as items of interest to buyers.) The items are from the Jacobean through the Victorian eras, with the majority being from the mid 18th through early 19th centuries. Some photographs are tipped in; these are marked “New York plate” followed by a number, and are identified and priced on the back. Some of the pieces are marked as being sold. One of the photographs is of the store’s display window; it is probably the New York store, although it is not marked. Some of the photographs are stamped as having been taken by Hegelstein Bros. of New York.

Notes
Post-binder album with black covers. Stamped in gilt on front cover: Rosenbach Co. Sellers mark inside front cover: Hegelstein Bros., Photographers… New York City. The covers are worn and have a few stains. Photographs are slightly discolored. A number of photographs are merely taped into the album and the edges have been stained by the tape.

Biography or history
The Rosenbach Co. was founded in Philadelphia in 1903 by the noted book collector and dealer A.S.W. Rosenbach and others. The company later opened a store in New York City. In addition to books, it sold antiques and objets d’art and offered picture framing services. It was in business until the mid 1950s.
