The early group of correspondence comprises 42 letters of a largely personal nature from relatives, friends, and acquaintances, including some from Samuel M. Hunt and from various family members in Union Village, Springfield, Marathon, and various other locations in New York State.

Letters chiefly concern family and personal matters, with few items touching upon professional affairs. During this time, Havens worked in the law office of George Washington Strong and George Griffin in New York City.

The later group consists of 48 letters from his friend, John H. Gourlie, most of them written from Stockbridge, Massachusetts, while Gourlie was on vacation. He writes of their mutual friends, comments on events in New York, local news in Stockbridge, world affairs, publications and reviews, family and personal matters, etc.
