description | The records consist mainly of business correspondence with collectors, artists, museums and arts organizations, colleagues, and others. A small amount of Frank K. M. Rehn’s personal correspondence and a few stray personal papers of individual artists are interfiled. Also included are financial records, five scrapbooks, printed matter, miscellaneous records, and photographs documenting the 63 year history of a highly regarded New York art gallery devoted to American painting. Correspondence is between Frank K. Rehn and artists, collectors, critics, museums, and other dealers including Alexander Brook, Clay Bartlett, George Bellows, Charles Burchfield, Glenn O. Coleman, Howard N. Cook, Virginia Cuthbert, Andrew Dasburg, Daniel Chester French, John Gellatly, Charles W. Hawthorne, Robert Henri, Edward Hopper, Alexander James, Elizabeth Sparhawk Jones, Leon Kroll, George Luks, Peppino Mangravite, Henry Lee McFee, Gari Melchers, Charles Hovey Pepper, Duncan Phillips, Henry Varnum Poor, Alex Russo, Raphael Soyer, John T. Spalding, Eugene Speicher, Ben Spruance, Henry Strater, Allen Tucker, Richard Derby Tucker, Denny Winters, Mahonri Young, and others. Material concerning Reginald and Felicia Meyer Marsh include a family photograph album, 1912-1915, 71 photographs of Marsh and his family and friends, 1900-1950's, and 10 photographs of his childhood drawings; an undated sketchbook and watercolor by Marsh; a gallery proof of the book THE ROAR OF THE CITY, by Harry Salpeter; an illustrated greeting card from Warren Chappell, a postcard to Felicia Meyer Marsh, and a note to H. Meyer from Armbrecht, 1858; clippings; an a receipt. Material concerning Edward Hopper includes 14 letters from Edward Hopper to John Clancy (donor), 1950s-1960s; a letter from Hopper to J. Robert Orton, Jr.; 2 letters from Jo Hopper to Clancy; notes, 1963, about Hopper's works and addresses of collectors written on a Rehn Gallery exhibition announcement; and 2 clippings. Bio / His Notes: Art gallery; New York, N.Y. Owned by Frank Knox Morton Rehn (1886-1956), son of the marine painter Frank Knox Morton Rehn (1848-1914). John Clancy (1897-1981) was Rehn's long-time assistant who eventually became the gallery director; after Rehn's death he purchased the gallery, which continued to operate under the name Rehn Galleries until 1981. acquisition information | Material on reels 5849-5872 represents numerous accessions donated between 1966-1981 by John Clancy through the Rehn Galleries and merged and refilmed in 2004. Most of this material had been filmed earlier as individual loan and gift accessions on reels NY59/17-NY59/18, D289-D293, 647-653, 2670, 2708, and 3814. The Hopper material was donated in 1985 by the Whitney Museum of American Art, who had received it from John Clancy. A death mask of George Luks received with the collection was transferred to the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution. |
