Correspondence includes ca. 40 letters received from family and associates, many of them from George Zabriskie, concerning individual paintings, exhibitions, and Dunsmore's activities as a member of various professional and cultural organizations. Also included are lists and descriptions of Dunsmore's paintings, genealogical notes on the histories of the Dunsmore and related Hedden family, manuscripts of 4 speeches on such topics as the sun, George Washington, and the American artist and the general public; notes and memoranda, a scrapbook of clippings concerning the art world, Dunsmore's career, and other topical affairs, bills for utilities, tax returns for the 1930s, and a booklet admission tickets for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, with a portrait of Dunsmore pasted to inside front cover.

descriptionThe collection contains some original items removed from and copies of materials bound into George A. Zabriskie's copies of the two volumes of James Longstreet, From Manassas to Appomattox (Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott Company, 1896), now a part of the collections of the Virginia Historical Society, which items were largely collected by Zabriskie for the autographs they contained.

Includes letters written by P.G.T. Beauregard, Richard Stoddert Ewell, Ambrose Powell Hill, John Bell Hood, Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, George Edward Pickett (concerning ordnance), Winfield Scott, George Henry Thomas (concerning the location of Camp Cooper, Texas, in 1859), and other officers serving in the U.S. Army. Also contains autographs of a number of Confederate and U.S. army officers from the Civil War period.

Bio/History: George Albert Zabriskie was a native of New York City, an influential New York businessman, and U.S. Flour and Sugar Administrator during World War I. He once served as president of the New-York Historical Society and took a particular interest in the period of the American Civil War.
