descriptionCollection consists of papers of John Jacob Astor and his grandson and great-grandson. Papers of John Jacob Astor, 1792-1849, include correspondence (some photostats) concerning real estate and other business transactions, legal affairs and family matters; financial records; and 1849 report by executors of Astor's estate. Papers of John Jacob Astor III and William Waldorf Astor, ca. 1800-1916, chiefly relate to genealogical matters, William Astor's life in England after 1890 and his efforts to obtain a peerage. Also, Astor family album of photographs and drawings, William Astor album of sketches, and Daniel Nebel ledger, 1805-1862.

Biographical Note
John Jacob Astor (1763-1848) was an American merchant, fur trader and capitalist. John Jacob Astor, III (1822-1890), financier and philanthropist, was his grandson; and William Waldorf Astor (1848-1929), who became Viscount Astor after moving to England in 1890, was his great-grandson.

descriptionThis is a synthetic collection consisting of manuscripts, a typescript, and correspondence. The manuscripts include a poem and lists of books and characters; the typescript is a carbon of "Unpublished Letters of Baron Corvo." The correspondence consists of letters from the author, dating from 1891 to 1911, to W. W. Astor, Charles Philip Kains-Jackson, G. T. Maquay, and Lonsdale Ragg, as well as letters relating to the author, dating from [1891?] to 1954, between various correspondents, including R. H. Benson, Winifred E. Deighton, Leonard H. Green, Charles Philip Kains-Jackson, John Gambril Nicholson, Laura Ragg, Lonsdale Ragg, Nancy Gleeson White, and others. There is also an August 1909 letter to Rolfe from Lonsdale Ragg.

Biographical Note
Frederick Rolfe was an English novelist, essayist, and short-story writer. He wrote under the pseudonym Baron Corvo.

Includes translations of letters (1828-1841) of August Belmont (1816-1890) to his family about his early training in the Rothschild office in Frankfurt, Germany, and later experiences in New York. Correspondents include William W. Astor, Newton D. Baker, Josephus Daniels, Harry M. Daugherty, Stuyvesant Fish, George W. Goethals, Warren G. Harding, W. Averell Harriman, Henry Cabot Lodge, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Woodrow Wilson.
