| description | When the California National Bank of Sacramento closed in 1931, this collection was listed among its assets. Materials in the collection had been accumulated primarily during the period when the bank was known as the National Bank of D. O. Mills and Company, hence the title of the collection. Although the collection contains many documents relating to the Bank, it is not a comprehensive archive and some corporate records are not included. In addition, there are many items relating to the business activities of the Mills family in general and, specifically of the two Mills brothers, D. O. (Darius Ogden) and Edgar. Of particular interest are papers dealing with their involvement in early California banking, mining and railroading activities. The collection has been arranged into five series: Business papers, Estate papers, Mining papers, Railroad papers, and Transaction records. For other material on Edgar Mills and the Mills family, see The Edgar Mills papers. Biographical and Historical Note: D. O. (Darius Ogden) Mills came to California from New York state in 1849. He opened a store in Sacramento and, shortly thereafter, established the first banking house in California. By 1852, the Bank of D.O. Mills and Company was expanding and opened a branch in Columbia, Tuolumne County, which was managed by Mills' brother, Edgar./ The name of the bank went through several iterations over the years, including: D. O. Mills ? National Gold Bank of D. O. Mills and Company (1872-1882); National Bank of D. O. Mills and Company (1883-1912). Partners associated with the bank include the Mills brothers, James and Edgar, a cousin, E. J. Townsend (1852-1855), and Henry Miller (1855). In 1912, the bank merged with the California National Bank of Sacramento which closed in 1931. The Mills family invested widely in the early economic development of California. Their interests included land development, farming, mining, railroads, etc. After 1873, D. O. Mills relocated to New York but continued to be widely invested in California. His brother, Edgar, remained in Sacramento and took care of the family interests until his death in 1893. |

| description | Business papers: Documents relating to real estate ventures in Menlo Park, Colusa County and San Francisco. In Menlo Park, Mills was involved in the development of a residential subdivision; documents include deeds, a plat map, financial statements. In Colusa County near Maxwell, Mills owned agricultural acreage for growing wheat; documents include financial accounts with various grain merchants and property tax statements. John Boggs, mentioned in several documents, was an early Colusa County settler and the president of the Colusa County Bank. Mills also owned rental properties in San Francisco; documents include land titles and correspondence with C. S. Capp & Co. Real Estate Brokers and Agents. Miscellaneous financial documents refer to land in Oregon, New York stock accounts from the firm of C. A. Harden & Co, and checks drawn on the Bank of California by Mills Personal correspondence is primarily incoming, 1879-1887; correspondents include D.O. Mills, Ogden Mills, Benjamin B. Redding, Jerome Madden and Albert Gansl. As might be expected, the personal correspondence between early California's premier bankers occasionally involves financial affairs. D.O. Mills writes about the construction and leasing of his building in New York and the engagement of his son, Ogden. Ogden also writes about his engagement and honeymoon plans. An 1882 letter from B.B. Redding and Jerome Madden, of the Central Pacific Land Office, requests Mills to use his influence in obtaining employment at the U.S. Mint for a Mrs. Kennedy, left destitute by the death of her husband. In a 1881 letter Albert Gansl, past San Francisco agent of the Rothchilds, writes about wingshooting in Buckinghamshire with Sir Nathaniel de Rothchild and an American who shot against the legendary Captain Borgardus. A thank you note, which also notes the social activities of an elite debutante, is written on mourning paper. Biographical and Historical Note: Edgar Mills was born in North Salem, New York, in 1828 and trained as a civil engineer. After surveying a railroad along the Hudson River, he arrived in California in 1849 and made the first surveys of the Feather and Sacramento Rivers for Samuel Brannan and John A. Sutter. Subsequently he entered the banking business with his brother D.O. (Darius Ogden) Mills, of Sacramento. In 1852, with brother James Mills, he established a branch of the Sacramento Bank in Columbia, Tuolumne County. When James died in 1856 the Tuolumne County bank was sold, and Edgar temporarily retired. He later returned to the Sacramento Bank and took charge of it while D.O. Mills was associated with the Bank of California. After D.O. Mills relocated to New York in 1873, Edgar remained in California, overseeing the family businesses. In addition to banking, Edgar's business dealings involved commercial land development and several railroad ventures. He spent the latter part of his life in San Francisco, where he died on January 10, 1893. He was survived by a son, Edgar Mills, Jr., and two daughters, Adeline and Florence. |

| description | Business letters to Atherton are primarily from his partner and friend George H. Bowen, his San Francisco agent Alexander B. Grogan, and Samuel D. Crane, among others. Most Bowen letters were written from Valparaiso but others are from Europe and San Francisco and report to Atherton on business and trade prospects. A letter from San Francisco describes the area and discusses mines, farming and ranching, fires in Sacramento, San Francisco, and Marysville, commodities such as flour, oil and lumber, and working with Grogan on Atherton's affairs. Other Bowen letters from Valparaiso to Atherton in San Francisco discuss business, politics, economics, and other aspects of life in Chile, other South American topics, and family. Bowen's letters often mention transportation including shipping (ships and captains) and mail. Some letters mention dealings with Chas. Loring in Boston. Grogan's letters (some signed Grogan & Lent) relate to Atherton's business and legal affairs in San Francisco and Europe, including real estate transactions. He also mentions financial deals with Castro at Rancho San Lorenzo. Also includes miscellaneous letters to Atherton, financial documents, and real estate documents. Business letters to George W. Gibson are primarily from A.K.P. Harmon in Boston and the Sacramento banking firm of D.O. Mills and Co. Harmon letters pertain to Gibson's business (a shoe store?), supplying goods, business in Boston, and mutual friends. D.O. Mills & Co. letters and statements relate to their management of Gibson's California business affairs in his absence and include California news, reports of gold in the Frazer river, reports of the dull business climate in Sacramento, transaction summaries, and other financial updates. | description | The bound volumes are chiefly letterpress copies of letters sent, 1872-1910 (with some gaps) There are 27 v. of general business correspondence, including many letters to D.O. Mills, principal owner of most of the businesses in which Yerington was associated, and to the outstanding Nevada political figures of the time. Other volumes are primarily concerned with affairs of various companies (see below) Two letterbooks, 1896-1914, contain letters by a son, E.B. Yerington, who was General Freight and Passenger Agent for the V & T and the C & C. One volume of shipping notices, 1899-1914, and three letterbooks, 1883-1890, reflect the affairs of another son, Hume Yerington, who as General Purchasing and Supply Agent for the two railroads. The unbound papers consist of approximately 4,600 items, of which a few are personal papers, family letters, and obituary clippings. Letters received, 1864-1950, for the most part are concerned with affairs of the V & T and the C & C railroads, but reflect other business interests. Included also are diaries of travels in Europe, the Eastern Mediterrnaean area and Alaska; incomplete reminiscence of Bartleson Party's overland journey; and papers for the settlement of Belden's estate. Carton 1: vols. 1-17; Carton 2: vols. 18-24. This collection of Belden's papers was a gift to the Bancroft Library from Clyde Arbuckle in January, 1963. A few items from other sources (so noted, including the T. W. Norris Collection) have been added. Photocopy of letter from Charles J. Belden to Mr. Arbuckle has been placed in Box I. Portraits cataloged as portraits 14772-14774. Biograpahical Note Josiah Belden, born in Connecticut of 17th century colonist stock, was a member of the first planned emigrant party to cross the plains to California. A member of the Bartleson Party, Belden left Missouri early in May and arrived in California, after considerable hardship, in November, 1841. Settling first in the Santa Cruz area, where he managed a store for Thomas O. Larkin, Belden also operated a small store in Monterey. Upon acquiring Mexican citizenship he received a grant of land, the Barranca Colorado, on the upper Sacramento River, which he later sold to William B. Ide. In about 1846 Belden managed a store in Yerba Buena for Captain John Paty, later was associated with William Heath Davis, and in 1847 established a store in San Jose in silent partnership with Henry Mellus and William D. M. Howard. With the gold excitement this enterprise first languished as the inhabitants left for the mines, but prospered greatly as they returned with gold to spend, and new residents also came to the town. Belden retired from this operation in 1849, about the time he married Sarah Margaret, daughter of Zachariah Jones, an 1846 arrival in California. They continued to live in San Jose where Belden took an active part in civic affairs and property development until 1881, when they moved to New York City where Belden died in 1892. By astute investment, including San Francisco real estate, Belden became a wealthy man for his times. The papers reflect his merchandising operations, particularly his association with Mellus and Howard, and some of his investments, including the San Francisco property. He was interested in quicksilver mines, particularly the New Almaden and the Guadalupe, and in mining property in Mexico. The accounts contain many names and signatures of the early pioneers. Unfortunately, there is not much correspondence. Diaries kept by Belden and Mrs. Belden on their travels to Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean area and to Alaska are included. Also, papers for the settlement of Belden's estate and a copy of Mrs. Belden's will are with the papers. |

| description | Two years after Daniel Huntington's death, his son Charles Richards Huntington (1847-1915) presented the New-York Historical Society with a collection of 141 portrait photographs used by his father "for his study of the subjects painted by him." Each of the men (and the single woman, Mary McCrea Stuart) in the collection is represented by one or more portrait photographs which had been blown-up to life-size dimensions, sometimes made from a previously existing negative or one made of an earlier photograph. In the case of sitters who died before the advent of paper photography, images were taken from daguerreotypes. The enlargements were mounted on a stiff paperboard and roughly trimmed almost to the shape of the subject's head. Each of the portraits has the sitter's surname in pencil on the verso; some have a shorthand clue to an occupation, profession, title, or institutional affiliation. These annotations, if contemporary to Huntington or his son, have been transcribed in the box and folder list that follows. Many of the photographs have a puncture at their top, most likely from the nail Huntington used to tack them up in view of his easel. The sitters are familiar to students of nineteenth-century New York: they include prominent bankers, merchants, industrialists, educators, financiers, generals, lawyers, judges, politicians, government officials, and men of the cloth. The photographs are generally not dated. Several note that they were made from daguerreotypes and a few mention particular photographers, or are mounted on the backs of printed boards from photographers' studios. The images that are dated range from the 1870s (Henry Potter) to the 1890s (Kelly, Gracie, Schurz, and Sheldon). Photographers mentioned are Bogardus (Adams, Arthur) and Sarony (Tilden), with one annotated by Huntington as having been taken in his studio (Sherman). Eight of the portraits are mounted on the verso of stamped boards from the Rockwood Studio (Brown, Gracie, Johnston, Henry Potter, Taft, and Weir) or Kurtz (Dodge Sr. and Hostetter) in New York. In addition, the portrait of Henry Codman Potter is mounted on the verso of a large photograph of Calvary Baptist Church, on West Twenty-third Street. Oil portraits of these sitters are now in the New York Chamber of Commerce Collection at the New York State Museum, the Smithsonian Institution, Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History, New York Public Library, Harvard University, Vassar College, and West Point Museum, among other institutions. The New-York Historical Society owns more than twenty portraits painted by Huntington. Other portraits remain in private collections, including those of social clubs, hospitals, corporations, and the families who commissioned them from the artist. Biographical Note Daniel Huntington (1814-1906) was educated at Hamilton College. He studied panting with Samuel Morse and Henry Inman in New York City. He primarily painted portraits and landscapes. Huntington was president of the National Academy of Design, and Vice-President of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
