descriptionLetters, memos, meeting minutes, lists of students, lecture notes, receipts, accounts, circulars kept during his tenure as Professor and a diary. Of major concern was the restructuring of the School with particular focus on the Department of Mines, Arts, and Manufacturers. Included are two pamphlets printed in reaction against the reorganization of the University: Alonzo Potter to J.R. Ingersoll and Henry Vethake to William M. Meredith. The Diary carries a journal of Potomac Survey in 1862.

Biography/History:
Fairman Rogers (1833-1900) graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with an A.B. in 1853 and an A.M. in 1856. He served as Professor of Civil Engineering until 1864 and as a Trustee from 1871 to 1886 at the University of Pennsylvania. He was engaged in surveys of the Potomac River for the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey. He was well published on engineering topics, but was equally well known for riding and driving matters as he was the founder of the Philadelphia Coaching Club and the first person in Philadelphia to drive a four-in-hand.

descriptionTwo letters from George B. Grant of Charlestown to Fairman Rogers of Newport, RI, dated 6 August and 27 October 1875, concerning the specifications of a calculating machine that Grant is to make for Rogers.

With the letter of 6 August 1875, Grant encloses a bound offprint of his article entitled "A new calculating machine" that had appeared in The American Journal of Science and Arts, Vol. VIII, Oct. 1874, pp. [277]-284. In this article he discusses the history of calculating machines and submits his own design.

Biography/History:
George B. Grant designed a new calculating machine, known as the Grant Engine, in 1874.
