titleByron Harvey III collection (RC199)

descriptionThe collection includes correspondence between Mrs. Ollie Yarlott and Reba Garwood from 1909 to 1921. Ollie and her husband Frank lived in Montana where he was employed by the Crow Agency.

Many of Ollie's letters to Reba make reference to small gifts exchanged between them, including rocks and wood taken from "Custer's Battlefield". In another letter, dated December 26, 1921, Ollie refers to the discovery of oil about 50 miles from the Crow Agency which has brought construction of a new railroad to "have the oil to market".

Other letters include a miniature rug and shovel, dried plant material, and two small photographs of Alice Yarlott. This collection also includes three 7" x 9" tinted photographs of Native Americans and a stereograph image from 1903 entitled "An Indian Family at Niagara Falls." A matted 8x10 black and white photograph of Byron Harvey III and five 3x4 color glass slides are also included.

acquisition informationAcquired by the Heard Museum from Byron Harvey III. Harvey acquired many of the stereographs at an auction held by Robert W. Skinner, Inc. of Boston, MA on March 25, 1980. A copy of portions of the auction catalogue is maintained in the collection file, which is available on request. The photographs by Gustaf Sandahl were acquired by the Heard Museum from Harvey in 1985, loan 898.
