Administrative / Biographical History
Alice Pike Barney was born in 1857 to a wealthy Cincinnati, Ohio family.

She was married in 1876 to Albert Barney, a wealthy banker, and they settled in Washington D.C. in 1889. Always a lover of the arts, Pike Barney traveled extensively through Europe before and after her marriage and studied with several of the great artists of her time.

In 1902, shortly before her husband's death, she began to design the Barney Studio House with help from architect Waddy B. Wood. It opened at 2306 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, in 1903.
