description | Book is alphabetized by last name, and lists who visited, their place of residence, and the day of reception. The script in the book is neatly printed in browned ink, yet there are also scrawled pencil marks on some of the pages and some names have been crossed out with lead. Included with the book is a typewritten copy of entries. Administrative / Biographical History Alice Pike Barney was born in 1857 to a wealthy Cincinnati, Ohio family. She was married in 1876 to Albert Barney, a wealthy banker, and they settled in Washington D.C. in 1889. Always a lover of the arts, Pike Barney traveled extensively through Europe before and after her marriage and studied with several of the great artists of her time. In 1902, shortly before her husband's death, she began to design the Barney Studio House with help from architect Waddy B. Wood. It opened at 2306 Massachusetts Avenue, NW, in 1903. Notes The repository also has a typescript copy of the book for clarification purposes. |
