title | Frederic G. Melcher-Robert Frost Collection, Accession #13024 |
repository | University of Virginia Library |
description | This collection consists of the personal and professional papers of Frederic G. Melcher, editor of The Publishers' Weekly, particularly those dealing with his collection of materials concerning Robert Frost, but also his relationships to other writers, publishers, and others of the book world. Frederic G. Melcher maintained a warm friendship with Robert Frost throughout his life and this relationship is reflected in the correspondence between the two men. These papers, 1865-1963, include correspondence, printed ephemera, news clippings, photographs, manuscripts, etc., ca. 1,375 items (6 Hollinger boxes, 2.5 linear feet). Most of the correspondence in series five is addressed to Melcher; when it is not addressed to Melcher either personally or as editor of The Publishers' Weekly, the recipient is noted in the guide. Many of the letters in this section were generated by responses to the invitation to a dinner celebrating Robert Frost's 50th birthday; by Melcher's invitation to various authors or other individuals to come and speak at Montclair, New Jersey; or to answer Melcher's 1934 question for The Publishers' Weekly concerning recommendations for essential reading in the coming year. Biographical/Historical Information Frederic Gershom Melcher (1879-1963) was born in Malden, Massachusetts, and died on March 9, 1963, only a short while after his friend, Robert Frost. Melcher's influence in the world of books was notable, having worked as a publisher and editor for more than a half century; a bookseller at Charles E. Lauriat Company of Boston and W.K. Stewart Company, Indianapolis, Indiana (1913-1918), for almost a quarter of a century; becoming co-editor of The Publishers' Weekly in 1918, and chairman of R.R. Bowker & Company in 1958. Melcher contributed to the promotion of good literature for children by helping develop Children's Book Week (1919), establishing the John Newbery Medal (1921) for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children, and establishing the Caldecott Medal, for the best American picture book for children (1937). |

title | Grabhorn Press Records, 1917-1973 |
repository | University of California, Berkeley |
description | The records of Grabhorn Press, 1917-1973, consist of correspondence and project files relating mainly to works printed by the press, along with extensive business and financial records, and a few miscellaneous papers. The Grabhorn Press was founded in 1920 in San Francisco, California, by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn. Their correspondence with authors, artists, and other printers relates chiefly to the work of the press, but also includes two letters written by Edwin in 1918-19, while he was still in Indianapolis. Project files kept by the Grabhorn Press include manuscripts, illustrations, galleys, and various incomplete segments and trial pieces of many of the Press' works. These are listed by author and/or title, and include the citation number from the Grabhorn Press Bibliography. Miscellaneous Papers contains awards and clippings the Grabhorns kept about the press. Business and financial records represent the greatest bulk within the collection, and consist of bank statements, check stubs, accounts for the purchase of papers, ink, and other printing supplies, order and sales statements, with some miscellaneous business, tax, and insurance records. Biography Robert (1900-1973) and Edwin (1889-1968) Grabhorn, from Indiana, began printing in 1911 in Seattle, later moved to Indianapolis, and established the Grabhorn Press in San Francisco in 1920. title | Julius S. Held papers, 1918-1999. |
repository | The Getty Research Institute |
description | The material provides a broad and detailed study of Held's professional life, his scholarly development, and his working methods. A major portion comprises scholarly correspondence with other art historians, including numerous prominent American and European scholars as well as young colleagues and post-graduate students. Also present is professional correspondence with art dealers, auction houses, museums, and publishing firms, and a large body of occasional correspondence with private collectors. Letters by Held are particularly valuable for their frank assessments of art objects. Included is material documenting Held's research for essays, reviews and articles, his many teaching and lecturing activities, as well as his involvement as an art expert in legal cases. The archive also contains extensive travel notes. A distinct group of material details Held's role in building the collection of Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico. A very large portion of the archive consists of study photographs and other visual documentation of artwork by Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, Rembrandt, and a vast number of other artists, mainly Dutch and Flemish from the 15th to 18th centuries. Bio./Hist. Note: The American art historian Julius Samuel Held (1905-2002) was renowned for his scholarship in 16th- and 17th-century Dutch and Flemish art, and an authority on the works of Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and Rembrandt. Educated in pre-war Germany, Held emigrated in 1934 to the United States where he pursued an academic career at Barnard College, Columbia University. Held also lectured and taught at other colleges and art institutions in the United States. |
