descriptionOne hundred twenty-one letters, 1946-1956, from Carl Hofer to Grabhorn, who had been his student; a printed speech by Hofer concerning an exhibition opening in Frankfurt, 1954; and letters, 1948-1991, from friends and colleagues, discussing Grabhorn's career as a painter and art patron, and her interest in painter Hans Thoma and the activities and prizes named for him.

Other material includes 3 receipts; notes; clippings, 1987-1990; an exhibition catalog for Thoma; 6 programs, 1952-1984; and 4 photographs of a house and an unidentifed art work.

Bio/History:
Painter and art patron; San Francisco, Calif. Born Irma Leisinger in Badenweiler, Germany, in 1910?. She was a student of Andre Lhote in Paris, and studied at the Academy of Arts in Berlin under Carl Hofer.

Married Samuel Engel, professor of ophthamology at Stanford University, in 1932. Had several exhibitions of her work in New York and San Francisco.

Following the death of Mr. Engel, she married Edwin Grabhorn in 1964.
