titleDieterle family records of French art galleries, 1846-1986.
repositoryThe Getty Research Institute
descriptionThe Dieterle family built an art dealership with particular expertise in Jean -Baptiste-Camille Corot.

Collection comprises portions of French gallery archives acquired (along with works of art) by the Dieterle family as they built their business and developed expertise in Corot.

The records are from 8 dealers: Goupil & Cie, Galerie Boussod Valadon & Co., Tedesco Frères, Bague et Cie, Arnold et Tripp, Le Roy et Cie, Galerie Allard et Noel, and Galerie Georges Petit, and those generated by Dieterle. Included are ledgers, photographs and glass negatives of paintings, exhibition and auction catalogs, most of which are annotated and accompanied by newspaper clippings and other ephemera giving the results of sales.

The records illustrate the art work and art market for the wide range of artists working in the 19th century, primarily European (particularly French), with some American artists. Included are all the major artists of the Barbizon school, those of the Romantic generation, academic artists, and some Impressionists.

The collection also reveals minor trade in Old Masters, especially Dutch.
