descriptionMiscellaneous bills, receipts, inventories, accounts, etc., 1840-1882, of New York leather merchant Israel Corse, principally for his purchases of paintings, sculptures, antiques, jewelry, furniture, silver, etc., in New York and abroad; along with correspondence and some papers of his granddaughter, Lena Cadwalader Evans, 1866-1937.

Corse's papers additionally include a few items of Corse family correspondence, letters from art and antiques dealers, inventories of paintings, statues, wood carvings, and furniture at his residence at 104 Fifth Ave. in 1869, and a copy of his will dated 1840. Also present are appraisals of various art objects in Corse's estate, a copy of the will of Corse's wife, Abigail Corse, dated 1842; a pocket diary for the year 1855, containing a few entries recording daily expenses and memoranda; and a sworn deposition delivered by the New York art expert and appraiser, Alfred Chatain, in the matter of the transfer tax upon the estate of Catherine K. Corse, deceased, being an appraisal of various paintings and statues belonging to the estate of the deceased and now on loan to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Papers of Lena C. Evans include correspondence, bills, passports, etc., and 23 personal, friendly letters from former mayor Smith Ely, written during 1906-1909.
