Fourteen ALS from Boughton to Robert Hoe that discuss the artist's illustrations for the Grolier Club edition of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (1908 ) and other matters relating to art.

English genre painter and illustrator who spent his youth in New York State. Boughton settled in London permanently in 1862, eventually becoming a member of the Royal Academy. Boughton worked in oils, watercolors, pastels and black and white, and he illustrated many historical works and romances dealing with Acadia and early New England. Some of his best known work as an illustrator is represented in two books commissioned by the Grolier Club: Washington Irving's History of New York (1886) and Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter (1908). Robert Hoe was a founding member of the Grolier Club.
