descriptionCollection consists of correspondence, minutes, reports, and other records of the Committee of Fifteen.

Correspondence, 1900-1901, of George W. Morgan, assistant secretary of the Committee, is with the public, Committee members, New York State Assembly members, and the New York City Dept. of Health. Other records of the Committee's investigations include notebooks containing entries detailing visits and violations; affidavits and reports made by investigators; and scrapbooks of press clippings, 1900-1901, about New York City politics, police and vice.

Biographical and Historical Notes:
The Committee of Fifteen was a non-partisan citizens' committee established in 1900 to investigate the cause and extent of the increase in prostitution and gambling in New York City and to promote legislation necessary to correct the problem. The Committee, consisting of prominent bankers, lawyers and businessmen, published its report, The Social Evil With Special Reference to Conditions Existing in the City of New York, in 1902.

descriptionThe papers consist of correspondence, writings, notes and research materials, clippings, memorabilia, photographs and financial records of William Graham Sumner, a sociologist, professor at Yale University, and advocate of free trade and the gold standard.

The correspondence (over 13,000 items) documents many of Sumner's interests including the Yale College curriculum and economic and political issues. It also includes substantive accounts from friends in the South about Reconstruction, the Freedmen's Bureau, and the Tilden-Hayes election. Family correspondence spans the years 1863-1908.

There are over 100 letters written by Sumner during the last years of his life to Albert Galloway Keller.

Biographical Sketch
William Graham Sumner was born in Paterson, New Jersey on October 30, 1840. He graduated from Yale University (B.A., 1863) and studied in Europe (1863-1866). He served as a tutor at Yale (1866-1869) and was ordained as a priest of the Calvary Church in New York City in 1869.

In 1872 Sumner was appointed to the newly created chair of political and social science at Yale. He retired as professor emeritus in 1909. Sumner was an educational and administrative leader at Yale, and had a substantive impact on the curriculum.

As a leading international sociologist Sumner wrote several major works during his lifetime. He died in Englewood, New Jersey on April 12, 1910.

acquisition informationThe papers were accummulated as a series of gifts. Between 1920 and 1956, the papers were the gift of Albert G. Keller. After 1956 a portion of the papers were donated by Deane Keller. In 1969 Mrs. Gilbert Troxell, Sumner's niece, donated additional materials. In 1975 Yale University purchased 1300 letters from Margaret L. Sumner. Additional papers were given by Trinity College in 1988.
