descriptionThe Nelson and Juanita Grief Gutman Papers measure .4 linear feet and date from 1911 to 1962, with most of the material spanning 1936 to 1957. They contain correspondence, invoices, clippings, photographs and other material related to the Gutmans’ art collection and its donation to the Baltimore Museum of Art. They document Mr. and Mrs. Gutman’s collecting, particularly in Paris during the 1930’s and after World War II.

Biographical Note
Nelson Gutman was born June 21st, 1879. He served as president of his father’s department store, the Julius Gutman & Co., Inc. in Baltimore for 24 years. He died in Baltimore August 16th, 1955.

Juanita “Nita” Greif was born July 16th, 1881. She married Nelson Gutman in 1909. Together they collected books, French posters and works by artists such as Picasso on their frequent trips to Europe. Their poster collection is a particularly important part of the collection of The Baltimore Museum of Art. Mrs. Gutman died September 5th, 1963. Mrs. Gutman’s sister, Lillian Greif, was also a donor to the BMA.
