| description | Records documenting the day-to-day administration of the Robert Schoelkopf Gallery from 1962-1991, with additional items predating the founding of the gallery from 1851-1961, including items relating to artists of the 19th and early 20th centuries and those relating to the period of transition during which Robert Schoelkopf ended his partnership with the Zabriskie Gallery. The records provide information on 20th century American art history, including his work to revitalize interest in turn-of-the-century impressionist or modernist painters, sculptors, as well as realist painters and sculptors from the latter half of the century, and contemporary fine art photographers. Artists' files comprise the bulk (23 ft.) of the collection, and contain primarily correspondence with artists, photographers, and clients interested in borrowing, consigning or purchasing their work. Also found are printed material documenting exhibitions and related events, general reference material about artists, photographic images of works of art, photographs of the artists, and an occasssional work of art or illustrated letter. Among the over 300 artists represented are files on Milet Andrejevic, James Aponovich, William Bailey, Leland Bell, Brassaî, Julia Margaret Cameron, Caren Canier, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Bruno Civitico, Joseph Cornell, Manierre Dawson, Elsie Driggs, Martha Mayer Erlebacher, Walker Evans, Gertrude Fiske, Gisèle Freund, William S. Horton, Miyako Ito, Gaston Lachaise, Gabriel Laderman, David Ligare, Louisa Matthiasdottir, Jan Matulka, Isabel McIlvain, Ethel Myers, Elie Nadelman, Langdon Quin, Joseph Stella, John Storrs, Paul Wiesenfeld, and William Wilkins. General business files, 1960-1991 (4.75 ft.), consists largely of correspondence with gallery owners, dealers, museums, art institutions, artists' estate representatives, and others, regarding appraisals, requests for information, loan, consignment, purchase, and offering works of art to clients. Group Exhibition Files, 1960-1988 (1 ft.), includes files on specific group exhibitions, containing photographs of installations, catalogs, announcements, clippings, press releases, and correspondence. Photographs of Artists, 1963-1981 (0.25 ft.) includes photographs and slide transparencies of artists that the gallery stored separately from the other files, and consist mainly of artists whose work the gallery did not handle. |
