titlePhotographs of fine and decorative arts.
repositoryThe Getty Research Institute
descriptionMaterial of particular interest to scholars of French decorative arts of the 16th to early 19th centuries. Numerous pieces bear the signature of famous makers. Most of the ca. 200 Gobelins, Beauvais and Aubusson tapestries are made after drawings or cartoons by painters such as Boucher, Oudry, Van Orley, Le Brun, Téniers. The porcelain pieces are mostly from the Sèvres or Meissen factories. The stock sheets, authentication letters, and other documents accompanying the photographs are also a source of information about collectors and their collections in France and the United States. The collection also includes photoprints of approximately fifty sculptures by French artists and of a similar number of paintings from various schools and periods.

The Photo Study Collection also acquired a collection of photographs of paintings and decorative arts from the National Gallery of Art’s Germain Seligmann Archive in the 1970s. The photos were printed from deteriorating negatives which remain in the possession of the National Gallery. That group of Seligmann decorative arts photos were interfiled in the Decorative Arts section.
