History note Part of a collection now numbering about 250,000 photographs that was started by Bernard Berenson, art historian and leading authority on Italian Renaissance painting, between the 1880s and his death in 1959. The bulk of the collection focuses on Medieval and Renaissance Italian painting and drawing from the thirteenth to the sixteenth centuries, distinguished by regional schools and arranged chronologically. The collection also includes smaller sections on Renaissance sculpture and architecture, manuscript illumination, antiquities, early Christian, Byzantine art and architecture, applied arts and non-Italian art, notably Asian and Islamic. Of special note are ca. 4,000 large-format photographs. Notes Picture media may include: gelatin silver prints, albumen prints, carbon prints and photomechanical prints. Artist file may include full views, details, before and after restoration views. Most photographic prints have inscriptions on verso that may identify provenance, exhibition history, related works, other attributions, bibliography, location, dimensions, and technique of the work of art reproduced. description | The Heim Gallery records document the business of the gallery, its cultivation of clients in Europe and the United States, and the production of its scholarly exhibitions especially for the period between 1966 and 1988. The correspondence with museums, individual clients and suppliers and experts comprise the greater part of the collection. Photographs of art works, financial papers, research and publicity files, and Andrew Ciechanowiecki’s personal business files make up the rest of the archive. Photographs of art works are organized by medium: paintings, drawings, sculpture, furniture and decorative arts, and represent works sold, with additional images of items before restoration, and art works documented for research or commercial reasons. Research notes, printed brochures, and photographs illustrate the production of exhibitions at the Heim Gallery. Research files contain notes, numerous study photographs, and some printed matter, organized by artist, school or medium. Many research files represent works offered to the gallery but rejected. Financial records include stockbooks, ledgers and cash books, as well as invoices, paid bills, and documents related to shipping and taxes. Financial records do not appear to be complete. Gallery publicity is documented through clippings, guest books, and photographs that show members of royalty attending exhibits at the gallery. The correspondence series contains letters received and the gallery’s copies of letters sent. Letters reflect the gallery’s offers to museums and individual collectors, curators’ requests for works for their collections or for assistance in finding works needed for exhibitions. The letters also document business strategies and Ciechanowiecki’s collaborations with museums and his solid scholarly contributions to exhibitions. The letters also reveal his close personal association with Poland and its artistic patrimony. A separate group of correspondence concerns the sale of the Heim Gallery. description | The Vander Poel Campanian collection is a research archive assembled for the study of the history of the excavations at Pompeii, and to a lesser extent, at Herculaneum and Stabiae. The collection includes scholars' archives, rare books and articles, photographic materials, prints, maps and plans, drawings, paintings and the documentation of research projects and publications on Pompeii conducted or commissioned by Vander Poel. It represents the culmination of almost forty years of investigations by Vander Poel, having been assembled in the period from circa 1958 to 1997. Yet, the collection contains much earlier material, acquired by Vander Poel in the form of both original works and reproductions. Scholars' archives comprise a substantial part of the Campanian collection. The papers of Matteo Della Corte and Tatiana Warscher are perhaps the most significant, both in terms of their size and their content. Matteo Della Corte, a leading epigrapher and former director of the Pompeii excavations, and Tatiana Warscher, an independent scholar, were both critical figures in the study of Pompeii in the first half of the twentieth century. The Matteo Della Corte papers (circa 108 linear feet) include his correspondence with scholars and excavation officials, such as Francis W. Kelsey, Amedeo Maiuri, Ettore Pais, Guido Scifoni and Vittorio Spinazzola; original research notes on the site and documentation of inscriptions; and the production materials for his prolific publications, as well as general professional and personal papers. The Tatiana Warscher papers (circa 40 linear feet) include her correspondence with her mentor, the historian Michael Rostovtzeff, her extensive and detailed photographic archive documenting the surviving architecture and its decoration, and several unpublished manuscripts. The Campanian collection also includes several smaller groups of papers from a wide range of scholars. Those related to Campanian archaeology are the papers of Pietro Soprano and Giovanni Oscar Onorato. The papers of Henry James Johnston-Lavis, a leading volcanologist of the late nineteenth to early twentieth century, reflect Vander Poel's interest not only in the site of Pompeii, but in Vesuvius as well. Also included in the collection are portions of the papers of two scholars not connected with Campania: Friedrich-Wilhelm von Hase, a prehistorian and Etruscologist, and Margaret Murray, an Egyptologist. Various projects devised by Vander Poel to synthesize and increase access to data on Pompeii form another large portion of the collection. Although the site of Pompeii stands as an archaeological icon, until recently, the excavations there have often been poorly documented, and the documentation that does exist has been widely dispersed and is difficult to use. Many of Vander Poel's projects, such as the Corpus topographicum Pompeianum, the new editions of early archaeological publications on Pompeii and the documentation of objects in the Museo archeologico nazionale di Napoli, were specifically designed to redress this problem. Especially useful to scholars in this respect are the manuscripts and notes for several unpublished volumes of the Corpus topographicum Pompeianum, and the concordances and indices facilitating the use of early publications on Pompeii. Another main component of the Campanian collection is the massive body of research materials on Pompeii collected by Vander Poel and his research team (RICA). These resources consist of over one thousand books, which were separated to the Library's general collection, and over 100 linear feet of archival material. Included in the archival material are a large collection of articles and offprints, many from rare journals, unpublished manuscripts, and reproductions of archival material held by a variety of institutions, as well as extensive visual documentation of the site. Photographs, including contemporary documentary photographs of the site, copies of historic photographs, and late nineteenth-century albums, form the majority of this visual material, but Vander Poel also collected prints, drawings and paintings. A variety of material further rounds out the Campanian collection. Vander Poel conducted excavations at Pompeii, concentrating on the House of Meleager, as well as at Gravina di Puglia, and his notes and photographs from this work form part of the collection. Other materials in the collection include a number of objects commissioned by Vander Poel, such as bronze portrait busts of Della Corte and Warscher, and administrative material relating to the Campanian collection. Lastly, the collection also contains a small selection of material not related to Campania, but to Vander Poel's other interests, especially art, antique and book collecting. Biographical/Historical Note: Halsted Billings Vander Poel (1911-2003) began collecting rare books and manuscripts, antiques and art as a young man, but after moving to Rome in 1956, he also turned his attention to the study of Pompeii. For the next forty years, Vander Poel devoted considerable time and financial resources to creating an extensive research library and archive documenting the archaeological investigations at Pompeii.
