Most of the photographs date from the late nineteenth-century, although a few are early twentieth-century prints.

descriptionPhotographs organized into the following folders by subject: Missions (includes Santa Barbara and Carmel) -- Yosemite -- Outdoor areas other than Yosemite (Viznagar Mining and Milling Co. in Alamo, coastal scenes including La Jolla and San Francisco's Seal Rocks & Fort Point, general scenery) -- Identified buildings within California (many hotels, Sutro Baths, Panama Pacific International Exposition, California Mid-winter Int'l. Exposition, woolen mills at Black Point) -- Sutter's Fort, 1930's -- Postcards (mainly relating to Chinatown, many Chinese children, temple, street scenes, etc.) -- Individuals/groups (some wearing large hats, costumes from gold rush era, bathers, and others) -- Miscellaneous. Miscellaneous additions (ca. 23 items) given by Baird at various dates have been made and not described within the above list.
