description | The George Wittenborn Papers consist of 34 5" document boxes boxes and 10 flat boxes for a total of 17 linear feet. Containing material with inclusive dates of 1930-1982, the Wittenborn Papers document the changing roles of George Wittenborn's enterprise, including the founding of his landmark store, his ground-breaking publications, his One-Wall Gallery, as well as the store's later years and Wittenborn's own death, in correspondence, photographs, clippings, and catalogues. The Papers include correspondence with numerous prominent artists, translators, critics, and writers who took part in Wittenborn's publishing work, his gallery shows, or simply were visitors to his shop. Also included are several scrapbooks, detailing the press's reactions to Wittenborn's publications (1945-72); another containing reviews of exhibitions at the One-Wall Gallery (1955-70); financial records; exhibition catalogues; and several Dictaphone recordings made by Wittenborn. |

acquisition information | When Wittenborn Art Books, Inc. closed in late 1991, Gabriel Austin, who had purchased the business from Joyce Wittenborn in 1975, donated seventeen cartons of papers to The Museum of Modern Art Library. On August 14, 1998, the Papers were transferred from the Library to the Museum Archives, where they were processed in 2001. |
