title | Adolphe Basler correspondence and newspaper clippings, 1912-1949 (bulk 1915-1935). | repository | The Getty Research Institute |
description | Collection consists, for the most part, of letters written to Adolphe Basler by various artists and critics (André Derain, Maurice de Vlaminck, Dufy, Apollinaire, Besson, Salmon, Jacob, Carco, Fénéon and publisher Bruno Cassirer, for example). The letters comment on Basler’s articles and books on artists such as Henri Rousseau, Derain, Maurice Utrillo and Basler’s work on primitive art and aesthetics. Many letters comment on Coubine (Kubín), Basler’s particular favorite and protégé, and the general (depressed) state of the art market. Included are 14 letters (copies) written by Basler. The letters reveal the difficulties Basler encountered as an art dealer and critic, and the perceived conflict of interest between these two functions. Basler’s letters are responses to criticism or perceived slights by other critics (André Salmon for example) or letters chronicling the theft of paintings from his collection in 1920 and their subsequent retrieval some years later. |

title | Fernand Fleuret letters received, 1907-1933 and undated. | repository | The Getty Research Institute |
description | Letters written by Raoul Dufy and Othon Friesz to Fleuret contain details of the modernist cultural milieu in Paris. Folder one contains 29 letters from Dufy. Dufy writes of current art projects, the wonderful light and inexpensive living in Marseilles, his submission for the Salon des independents, his friends departure for war (André Derain, Georges Braque, Adolphe Basler, Max Jacob and Apollinaire) and his own for Le Havre. He writes of his patriotic wartime projects (Les Pochettes des alliés for example) which sparks a discussion of the conflict between aesthetic and economic concerns in the production of art, and laments for the health of Apollinaire. Folder two contains 41 cards and letters from Othon Friesz to Fleuret. Friesz sends cards and letters from various vacation spots to his friends the Fleurets. He writes from the front during World War I and gives news of mutual acquaintances. Biographical or Historical Notes: Fleuret was a critic and art patron.
