finding aidAn inventory of the La Farge Family papers, compiled in 1973 by Katharine Morton, Head Librarian of the Yale University Library, appears on the microfilm and is available in hard copy in all Archives of American Art offices. It contains a summary of the contents of the papers, a brief biographical account of John La Farge, and a folder-level inventory indicating the number of items, type of material, and dates for each group.
acquisition informationThese five reels of microfilm were made available to the Archives of American Art in 1985 by Yale University Library, Manuscripts and Archives. A sixth, restricted reel containing the catalog of the works of La Farge compiled by Henry Adams La Farge was not included. The arrangement of the papers devised by the Yale University Library.

descriptionPersonal correspondence and papers, 1899-1952, of Rev. John La Farge (son of John La Farge the painter). There is a small collection of letters between father and son.

Materials include letters to and from various members of the La Farge family, particularly his mother, Margaret Perry La Farge, to whom he wrote regularly between 1899 and 1925. Much of the material consists of correspondence, family papers and genealogical information assembled by La Farge during the preparation of his autobiography, "The Manner is Ordinary," published in 1954 by Harcourt, Brace. The letters pertain to the personal affairs of the La Farge family; John La Farge's work as a priest in Ridge, Maryland, between ca. 1911 and ca. 1925, and the African American school the Cardinal Gibbons Institute he helped to establish there ca. 1924; to his work in improving race relations; his activities as an editor of America magazine; history of the La Farge and related families in France and America; et al. Included is a small body of correspondence with his father, artist John La Farge; as well as letters to La Farge and others from American novelist Henry James; letters addressed to his sister, Margaret A. La Farge, of Newport, Rhode Island; correspondence with his brother Oliver H. P. La Farge; his nephew Christopher La Farge; and many others.
