description | The Maurice Sterne Papers consist of the correspondence, manuscripts, sketches, photographs, and miscellaneous papers of Russian-born painter-sculptor Maurice Sterne. The papers span the years 1915 to 1963, with the bulk of Sterne's writings and correspondence coming in the last decade of his life. The collection was presented to The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library in 1965 by the estate of Sterne's wife, Vera Segal Sterne. The collection consists of six series: I. Correspondence (Boxes 1-4), II.Writings (Boxes 5-16), III.Family Papers (Boxes 17-21), IV. Photographs (Boxes 22-24), V.Printed Material (Boxes 25-27), and VI. Other Papers (Box 28). Oversize material is housed in Boxes 29-31. Bio/History: Maurice Sterne, Russian-born artist and sculptor, was noted for his series of paintings on Bali and was commissioned to execute a series of large murals for the Justice Department Building in Washington. description | The archive consists mainly of correspondence to Albert M. Bender; generally there are no carbons or copies of his letters. Correspondence to Bender arranged alphabetically by sender. Many of the letters he received simply acknowledge gifts or services rendered; others, however are significant in content and quantity, e.g., those from Mary Austin, Witter Bynner, Ina Coolbrith, Una Jeffers, Edwin Markham, Alfredo Ramos-Martinez, Joseph and Johanna, Raphael, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, Ella Winter, Charles Erskine Wood, William Butler Yeats and various members of the Yeats family, and many others. Biographical Note Albert M. Bender was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1866 and died in San Francisco, California in 1941. He came to San Francisco when he was sixteen and started out as an errand boy in the insurance business. Bender was an insurance broker by profession, a patron of the arts, and trustee of Mills College. He was so widely known and respected that a letter addressed simply "Saint Albert of San Francisco" once reached him through the U.S. Mail. He had friends of distinguished reputation throughout California and indeed throughout the world. |

description | The Edward Bruce papers measure 8.5 linear feet and date from 1902 to 1960, with the bulk of the material dating from 1932 to 1942. The collection documents Bruce's work as an artist and art administrator, primarily during the period of his tenure as director of the Treasury Department's Section of Fine Arts. The collection includes extensive correspondence to and from many notable artists and government officials, as well as biographical material, writings, financial material, printed material, scrapbooks, and photographs. Biographical material includes birth records and many awards and certificates. Correspondence contains hundreds of letters to and from family and friends, including art critic Leo Stein and artist Maurice Sterne, in addition to correspondence with art organizations, museums, galleries and artists such as George Biddle, Adrian Dornbush and Olin Dows. Bruce's career as director of the Treasury Department's Section of Fine Arts is documented in business correspondence that records his relationships with colleagues at the Section and other government officials, and his role on various committees, including the Commission of Fine Arts. Extensive correspondence with Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt concerning public art projects can also be found here. Writings include diaries and notebooks containing notes, addresses, lists for Section of Fine Arts projects, and dated entries on Bruce's government and political work. Also found are numerous written speeches that Bruce gave at public events on the importance of art, public art projects, and political issues. Financial material consists of a small number of personal financial records. Printed material documents Edward Bruce's career as an artist through news clippings, magazine articles, and exhibition catalogs. Brochures, bulletins from the Section of Fine Arts, published speeches and various miscellaneous publications provide additional documentation of other art and government affairs. Scrapbooks in this collection include significant news clippings, letters, photographs, and other printed material, which highlight Bruce's career. Photographs include both personal photographs and photographs of Bruce's artwork. Personal photographs include portraits of Bruce, and are also of friends of the Bruces and many special events, including an NBC radio broadcast and an exhibition attended by Eleanor Roosevelt. Other items include photographs taken by Bruce during his travels, and while living in Anticoli Carrado, Italy. Bio / His Notes: Painter, businessman, and art director; Washington, D.C. Bruce directed the Public Works of Art Project, Dec. 1933 - June 1934. Chief of the Section of Painting and Sculpture (later the Section of Fine Arts), a program in the Treasury Department and later reorganized under the Public Buildings Administration of the Federal Works Agency, established to administer the decoration of public buildings. |

description | The Augusta Fink papers consists of research notes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and interviews, used by Fink in her work on two of her books, the biography of Mary Austin, I-Mary, and her book on the Monterey Peninsula, Monterey, the presence of the past. The letters in Series I (boxes 1 & 2), addressed to and written by Mary Austin, are copies from the collection of Mary Austin papers in the Huntington Library. Included are letters from Albert Bender and members of Austin's family. Copies of Ina Sizer Cassidy's reminiscences about Mary Austin are included. Other materials in this series include the manuscript of I-Mary, the texts of some of Austin's early works, and a children's play by Mary Austin. Notes from interviews with people who knew Mary Austin, as well as transcripts of two audio taped interviews about Austin are also in this series. Series II (boxes 3 & 4), contains Fink's research notes on the history of Monterey County and newspaper articles from the Monterey Peninsula herald. In addition, there are scattered issues of the Noticias del puerto de Monterey: quarterly bulletin of historic Monterey, issued by the Monterey History and Art Association. Series III, reel-to-reel tapes of interviews conducted by Augusta Fink for her research on the Mary Austin and Monterey books, are in box 5. Included are interviews with Ansel and Virginia Adams. Boxes 6-9 hold Series IV, Fink's note cards used in her research on Mary Austin. Bio/History: Writer. Born in New York City in 1916. In 1939 received M.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles. Received the Silver Medal of the Commonwealth Club of California in 1972 for Monterey, the presence of the past. In 1982 she received the award of Merit from the California Historical Society for outstanding contributions to California history. In 1983 wrote I-Mary, a biography of Mary Austin. After graduating from the U.S. Military Academy in 1874, he became an aide to General O.O. Howard in 1877, serving with him in the Pacific Northwest during the Bannock and Paiute and Nez Percé Indian wars. He later attended Columbia University, obtained his law degrees, and established a practice of maritime and corporation law in Portland, Oregon. In addition to his successful law practice, Wood painted, wrote, and was a champion of social justice. Along with Sara Bard Field (1882-1974), whom he later married, Wood was an active supporter of liberal causes and became the center of an artistic and literary circle in the San Francisco area. Wood's publications include The poet in the desert (1915) and Heavenly discourse (1927), as well as various articles for the Pacific monthly and Century magazines.
