descriptionThese papers document the activities of James Ballard in assembling a collection of nearly 300 rugs; and those of his daughter, Nellie Ballard White, who continued lecturing, publishing, and studying rugs after her father's death.

I. Personal papers include: correspondence, invitations, announcements, lists, biographical information, news clippings, and papers regarding Ballard estate sale.

II. Printed material includes: catalogue texts, proofs, rug plates, articles and information on rugs.

III. Photographs and lantern slides are of people, rugs, and buildings.

Notes:
Collector Established the Ballard-Snow Liniment Co. in 1883, which became James F. Ballard Inc. in 1923. Served as the Director of the First National Bank and St. Louis Union Trust. Also served as a Trustee of the Missouri Historical Society and member of the executive committee of the Archaeological Society of St. Louis.

He started collecting rugs in 1905. Eventually his collection included nearly 300 rugs; many acquired during travels to 42 countries. Ballard gave large portions of his collection to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the City Art Museum of St. Louis during his lifetime.

descriptionBarber's correspondence is arranged in two alphabets, 1901 to 1911 and 1912 to 1916. Some Barber correspondence with Museum people was kept separately. Extensive correspondence with John T. Morris, Board of Trustees Vice President and a collector; John Story Jenks, also a collector and a Vice President of the Board; Leslie W. Miller, Principal of the School; and James L. Allan, Assistant Treasurer make up a series.
