| description | The twenty boxes comprising the Shirley Carter Burden Papers contain correspondence, collected material and information on his published photographic essays, and collected material and information on his many exhibitions, publications, and other photographic projects; the collection also includes Burden's records from his photography studio in Beverly Hills, various records on his personal collection of other artists' works, and special files he kept on other photographers such as Ansel Adams and Dorothea Lange who were both good friends of Shirley Burden. Practically all of the material found within the Burden Papers provides evidence of the degree to which Burden's life was dedicated to photography and the fine arts. The fact that the number of boxes of prints and negatives, over 69 boxes of which were transferred to the Photography Department upon initial accession, far exceeds the number of boxes of his papers is proof positive of how engrossed in the photgraphic world Burden's life really was. Included also is a large amount of fan-mail from colleagues, friends, and the public as well pertaining to his photographic books and life long support of photography in general.
