The Drexel family came to prominence in Philadelphia when the Austrian immigrant Francis Martin Drexel left his career as an artist/painter and opened a currency brokerage house. In 1837, Francis's son, Anthony J., took over the thriving business from his father and built a large fortune as a banker and Wall Street broker.

In 1891, A.J. Drexel founded the Drexel Institute with longtime business partner George W. Childs.

titlePierpont Morgan papers, 1803-1934 (bulk 1847-1890)
repositoryPierpont Morgan Library Archives
descriptionConsists of correspondence, school essays and quarterly reports, certificates and honors, clippings, passports, diaries, account books, and dealers’ lists.

Correspondence contains letters from Morgan to friends and family such as James Goodwin, George A. Dixon, Cyrus W. Field, John Pierpont, Junius Spencer Morgan, Juliet Pierpont Morgan, and Frances Tracy Morgan. Other persons or topics documented in this collection include: Amelia Sturges Morgan, Louisa Morgan Satterlee, Anne Tracy Morgan, J. P. Morgan, Jr., Belle da Costa Greene, Duncan, Sherman & Co., George Peabody & Co., J.S. Morgan & Co., J.P. Morgan & Co., the Corsair Dining Club, the Zodiac Club and the Pierpont Morgan Library.

Biographical Data:
Financier, industrial organizer, and art collector. Born in 1837 in Hartford, John Pierpont Morgan was educated in the U.S. and Europe before embarking on a career as a banker. From his first position as an unsalaried clerk at the New York banking firm of Duncan, Sherman & Company, Morgan went on to become a partner at Drexel, Morgan & Co.

In 1895, after the death of Anthony J. Drexel, the firm was renamed J.P. Morgan & Co. During these years Morgan presided over the reorganization of the country’s railroads as well as the incorporation of the major companies of the twentieth century, including General Electric, International Harvester Company, United States Steel Corporation and AT & T.

Throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, he began to expand the scope of his art collections. By 1902, he had amassed treasures in such proportions that he commissioned the design of a library to be built near his home.

In 1912, the growing concern that the financial welfare of the country was left largely in the hands of a few private individuals like Morgan, led to a Congressional hearing. After testifying before the Pujo Committee later that year, Morgan traveled to Egypt where his health rapidly declined. He died in Rome on March 31, 1913.

Some items in the collection were cataloged individually. Records for these items also contain the accession number ARC 1196.

acquisition informationMost of the items that now comprise the Pierpont Morgan Papers were collected over the years and given to the care of the Library by his son, J.P. Morgan, Jr. Because the buildings that are now known as the Pierpont Morgan Library were originally part of the Morgan home, it is difficult to say exactly when the care of the items in the collection were transferred to the custodianship of Morgan’s personal librarian—later the Library’s first director—Belle da Costa Greene. It is clear, however, from the many letters and memos found in this and other collections within the Archives, that Greene was actively seeking to bring together items that document the life and work of JPM, and that she had the full cooperation of his son, J.P. Morgan, Jr. The collection also contains some items that were donated by friends or other family members. The entries for these items include individual provenance notes.
