descriptionCorrespondence, writings, art work, photographs, printed material and financial and legal records document the artistic, teaching, and journalism careers of husband and wife Stephan Hirsch and Elsa Rogo. Correspondence is with friends, family, and colleagues, concerning commissions, exhibitions, travel, and teaching (1929-1962). Included are correspondence with Edith Halpert of the Downtown Gallery, 1930-1933; Holger Cahill of the Federal Art Project, 1935-1937; and A. Conger Goodyear, in his capacity as Chair of the Exhibition of Contemporary Art for the New York World's Fair, 1939. Other correspondents include Josef Albers, Kenneth Callahan, Walter Gropius, Lincoln Kirstein, Robert Laurent, Alain Locke, Jean Lurcat and Ralph Mayer. Writings consist of mss. drafts of writings and lectures on art (ca. 1930-1960), including a manuscript of Hamilton Easter Field's The Master Painter's Materials.

Teaching material is from Bennington and Bard colleges. Art work includes drawings, oil and watercolor sketches, and sketchbooks. Photographs are mainly those taken by Elsa Rogo documenting international diplomatic meetings, among them the 1945 United Nations Conference and the Chapultepe Inter-American Conference; and Mexican murals and muralists. Printed material consists of art periodicals, exhibition catalogs, and newspaper clippings. Correspondence, ca. 1930-1938, includes letters from Stefan Hirsch, Mexican painter Carlos Mérida, Frances Toor (editor of "Mexican Folkways"), actor Charles Laughton, Herlinda T. de Sáenz, editor Burton C. Hoffman regarding Rogo's book "Walls and Volcanos: The Creative Impulse of the Mexican People" (1937), and others. Printed material concerns the Rogo's Painting School for Mexican Children in Taxco, Mexico; Bennington College schedules and memoranda.

Photographs are of Rogo and Hirsch as well as President John F. Kennedy in San Jose. Art work includes draft writings; pencil figure studies possibly by Hirsch or Rogo, four folios, undated; three pencil figure studies by Mexican artist Rául Anguiano (b. 1915), a friend of Hirsch and Rogo; a reproduction of a lithograph by an unknown artist; and miscellany.

descriptionBiographical material, correspondence (1920-1977), diaries, notes and writings, art works, subject files (1939-1968), printed material (1919-1971), and photographs (1919-1929) document Geissbuhler's artistic activities in Paris and New England. Many letters (1920-1971), written by Geissbuhler to his wife Elisabeth Chase Geissbuhler, are illustrated. Other correspondents include Adelyn Breeskin, Margaret Browne, Edward W. Forbes, and A. Conger Goodyear. Art works consist of 26 sketchbooks (1915-1962), annotated in French and English, and over 600 figure studies (1922-1970). Printed material includes a Sculptors' Guild brochure, art course announcements (1958), and clippings (1924-1971). Other materials consist of 2 autobiographical accounts, an award from the Cambridge Centennial Exhibition (1946), an address book and calling cards. Printed material includes reproductions of Geissbuhler's work, an advertisement for the Academie Julian (1919), an exhibition announcement (1921), and a clipping (1925). Photographs (1919-1922) and a photograph album (1921-1929) contain images of Geissbuhler in his studio, his works, his family, and friends including Otto Banninger, Antoine Bourdelle, Alberto Giacometti, his father Giovanni Giacometti, and Germaine Richier. Sixteen photographs show art classes, primarily Bourdelle's classes (1919-1922), and Charles Graffley's studio (1921). Other materials consist of biographical notes, an award certificate and 4 sketches (1918). Correspondence consists of letters received from Antoine and Rhoda Bourdelle (1921-1977) and general correspondence concerning art business matters (1927-1971). A diary in 8 volumes (1921-1922) contains some illustrated entries. Printed material (1934-1971) consists of 40 exhibition catalogs, 8 clippings, and a school brochure. Four loose sketches are undated. Seven subject files concerning Geissbuhler's sculpture projects contain letters, business records, notes, and clippings. Photographs of Geissbuhler's work and one of his house, ca. 1924-1933. Letters (1937-1941) concern Geissbuhler's work for the WPA, Treasury Department, and the Federal Works Agency, primarily the Medford project and the Foxboro, Massachusetts, post office project. Other material consists of 3 forms, 2 exhibition catalogs, a press release concerning government projects, 2 rolled charcoal drawings and 2 photographs of the sculptural relief "Straw Cutting and Weaving" from the Foxboro, Massachusetts post office project, and notes.

descriptionCorrespondence, diaries, proclamations and drafts of letters chiefly relating to the Civil War, but also including letters from the Jacksonian period. The major portion of the collection concerns the siege of Fort Sumter with letters from both Major Robert Anderson and General P.G.T. Beauregard. Included also are a diary kept by General S. Wylie Crawford during the siege and two letters from Abraham Lincoln. Other portions of the collection concern Lincoln as a political figure, the relations of Jefferson Davis and General Beauregard, with letters by both principals, letters by and about General Sherman and letters on the controversy between Andrew Jackson and John Randolph, with letters from both.

Biographical/Historical note:
B.A., Yale, 1899; served in World War I; vice president for the Susquehanna Railroad Co., Great Southern Lumber Co., and managing director of the Goodyear Lumber Co.
