titleLetter : Albury, Surrey, Eng., to Daniel Webster, [Washington, D.C.], 1851 Dec. 19.
repositoryNewberry Library
descriptionDecember 19, 1851, letter to Daniel Webster, U.S. secretary of state, urging him to once again push the Congress to acquire George Catlin's "American Museum." Due to Catlin's indebtedness, his Indian paintings and artifacts, then in England, were in danger of "being sold piecemeal," and Tupper hoped the U.S. government would rescue the intact collection and preserve it for the American people. Though Webster's efforts again proved fruitless, the collection was obtained and shipped to Philadelphia by American locomotive manufacturer Joseph Harrison, whose widow later gave it to the United States National Museum (Smithsonian).
