| description | Correspondence, invoices, receipts and miscellaneous papers documenting the activities of the curator. The curators' files provide an overview of the Club's activities and its methods of operation. The files of curator Joseph Morton include his record book of the food and drink (with costs) served at all Grolier Club functions between 1901 and 1911. The William Billings material includes a file of autograph letters signed from artist and Club member Joseph Pennell. Among George McKay's correspondents were: Frederick B. Adams, Edwin Bechtel, Douglas McMurtrie Frederick Pottle, and Spencer Van B. Nichols, as well as such organizations as the American Institute of Graphic Arts and the Bibliographical Society of America. Among the files relating to dinners given at the Club is material documenting those for Howard Mansfield (1928) and Paul A. Bennett (1953). Also: a small amount of material relating to the Hroswitha Club. Historical Note Founded 1884 by a group of seven New York City book collectors with the object, as stated in its constitution, "of literary study and promotion of the arts pertaining to the production of books." Soon after its founding the Grolier Club created the remunerated position of curator. Under the aegis of the House Committee, the curator had general responsibilities for day-to-day operation of the club, including overseeing purchases, deliveries, maintenance and catering. The curator also carried out work for the officers, particularly for the secretary and treasurer, and responded to membership inquiries. The first curator, Hector Alliot, was appointed in 1884. He was succeeded by Henry Manning (1884-1893) and Joseph L. Morton (1893-1916). Between 1916 and 1924, three men held the position: Arthur K. Jolliffe (1916-1917); H. B. Chilson (1917-1918) and William R. Billings (1918-1924). With the appointment of George Leslie McKay in 1924, a professionally trained librarian, the curator's role further evolved to include assisting the librarian with inquiries and exhibitions. |

Terry Bender (1961-1964), Gabriel Austin (1964-1969), and Harvey Simmonds (1969-1970). In addition to correspondence, there are orders and invoices relating to books and bookbinding ordered for the Club for the period. Records for some groups of years appear incomplete. Between 1906 and 1916, Ruth Granniss sent out handwritten correspondence using a carbon-like paper to obtain copies; some of these are now difficult to read. The Granniss files of correspondents' letters include a few of her holograph originals. Individual correspondents include but are not limited to correspondence to and from: Elmer Adler, Frank Altschul, C. R. Ashbee, Samuel Putnam Avery, Henrietta Bartlett, Melbert B. Cary, George Watson Cole, Edith Diehl, Marian Dodd (Womens' University Club), Porter Garnett (Laboratory Press), Walter Gilliss, W. W. Greg, Louis Haber, Byrne Hackett, Sherman P. Haight, Lathrop Harper, Philip Hofer, Robert Jaffray, Geoffrey Keynes, Bella Landauer, Flora Livingston, Luther Livingston, Amy Lowell, Leonard L. Mackall, Ronald B. McKerrow, Howard Mansfield, Stanley Morison, Edward A. Parsons, Joseph Pennell, A. W. Pollard, Fanny Ratchford, Carl Purlington Rollins, Walter Kilburn Root, William Edwin Rudge, Margaret B. Stillwell, Edward L. Stone, Daniel Berkeley Updike, Beatrice Warde, Frederic Warde, and Lawrence C. Wroth. Book dealers and binders include but are not limited to: B. F. Stevens & Brown, G. E. Stechert & Co., Charles P. Lauriat, Atelier Bindery, French Binders (Doubleday & Co.), MacDonald James, MacDonald & Maier, and the Stikeman firm. The Alexander Davidson records contain material about the Morgan Gunst Fund for the Grolier Club and the Bender records include reports by Carolyn Horton on the physical rehabilitation of the Grolier Library during the years 1960-1962. Also: guestbooks for the period 1930-1955; entries often indicate purpose of users' research. Historical Note The Grolier Club was established in 1884 by seven New York City book collectors with the object, as stated its constitution, "of literary study and promotion of the arts pertaining to the production of books." It mounts four public exhibitions each year, publishes catalogs and other materials, and sponsors some lectures on the book arts. The first librarians of the Grolier Club were members of its Council and served in an honorary capacity. In September 1900, Henry Watson Kent was engaged as Assistant Librarian to help Richard Hoe Lawrence and carried out the bulk of the day-to-day work. In 1903 he was appointed librarian and remained until April 1905. Ruth Shepard Granniss, the cataloger, took over the running of the library and was officially appointed Librarian in 1906. George Leslie McKay, who had served as Curator since 1924, succeeded Granniss, holding both positions concurrently until his retirement at the end of 1958. His successor, Alexander Davidson, came from a career as a dealer in Americana, and served through 1960. He was succeeded by J. Terry Bender (1961-1964), Gabriel Austin (1964-1969), and Harvey Simmonds (1969-1970). |
