historical notes James Thrall Soby was a collector, critic, curator and tobacco heir.

Soby left his collection of paintings, sculpture and drawings to the Museum of Modern Art; he also served as a trustee and benefactor of the Museum of Modern Art.

Soby's collection included work by Picasso, de Chirico, Berard, Derain, Matisse, Miró, and others as he championed the surrealists and other contemporary artists.
