historical notes Blanchette Rockefeller was a philanthropist, art collector, patron, and served twice as the Museum of Modern Art's president. Mrs. Rockefeller was heiress to the Ferry seed fortune through her mother and her father was an engineer who became president of the Hooker Electro-Chemical Company.

She was a trustee of the Brearley School and of Vassar College, and she shared her husband's many philanthropic interests and his pleasure in collecting art. He was interested particularly in Asian art, and the Rockefeller homes were adorned with both Asian and American works. She once described their personal art collection as a "mishmash."

Mrs. Rockefeller was a member of the Asia Society's Gallery Advisory Committee and of the Japan Society's Gallery Advisory Committee. From 1974 to 1980, she was a member of the National Council on the Humanities and served on the New York State Council on the Arts. She was a member of the New York Philharmonic Symphony Society, the English-Speaking Union, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other leading cultural institutions.
