He served as secretary of the Museum of Art at Rhode Island School of Design, David E. Finley Fellow at the National Gallery of Art (1959-61), curator of Sculpture and paintings(1961-63) and the director of the Minneapolis Museum of Art (1963-73), chairman of the department of European Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1973-75), and as a professor at College of William & Mary and New York Institute of Art of New York University (1975-76). Clark collected Italian drawings, pottery, classical coins and primitive art objects.
