historical notes Art historian Ruth Bowman collected artist’s self-portraits, built in collaboration with Harry Kahn (1916-1999).

Bowman and Kahn frequented galleries together, and established a collection comprising 187 works of 146 artists, all built on the notion of teaching.

The collection now belongs to the National Portrait Gallery and includes work by, among others, Louis Losowick, Andy Warhol, Thomas Hart Benton, Jim Dine, David Hockney, Edward Hopper, Elaine de Kooning and Robert Rauschenberg.
