Art collector, American businessman, producer of printing press equipment, president of the Grolier Club and a founder of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Hoe was a collector of rare books, manuscripts, silver, miniatures, watches, ivories, prints, enamels, fans, and other art objects. Hoe's collection included paintings by Kennsett, Merle, Doyon and Bouguereau.
According to The Art Treasures of America, Hoe owned works by A. Achenbach, Chas. Baugniet, George H. Boughton, W. A. Bougureau, J. Breton, G. Brion, Thos. Couture, J. Dupré, E. Frère, Firmin Girard, F. Kraus, V. Lagye, Chas. Landelle, H. Merle, J. G. Meyer von Bremen, E. Plassan, Ad. Schreyer, Alfred Stevens, J. Stevens, C. Troyon, Antoine Vollon, Florent Willems, and Felix Ziem.
Art belonging to the Robert Hoe Estate was sold at auction via the American Art Association, February, 1911, netting $129,195.00.
