John Harsen Rhoades was a collector of American art, in the dry goods business (Bradley & Buffum), banker (trustee and president of the Greenwich Savings bank), founder and president of the Savings Banks Association of the State of New York, and a founder and president of the Society of Art Collectors (founded in 1903 with William T. Evans, Alexander Humphreys and Frederic Bonner).
Rhoades collection included work by, among others, Winslow Homer, Ralph A. Blakelock, Samuel Coleman, W. Gedney Bunce, J. Frank Currier, Arthur B. Davies, Charles H Davies, H Golden Dearth, Louis Paul Dessar, Charles Melville Dewey, Paul Dougherty, Winslow Homer, George Inness, John La Farge, Homer D. Martin, Albert P. Ryder, and John H Twachtman.
Rhoades was also a member of the Union League, City, Lawyer’s, Lotos and Century Clubs. His art collection was exhibited at the Lotos Club in 1903, 1905 and posthumously in 1914. He was also a member of the Municipal Art Society, St. Nicholas Society, Chamber of Commerce and Vice President of the Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Additionally Rhoades was the Director of the Bank of America, the Candelaria Mining Company, the Corralitos Company, the Lawyers Title Insurance and Trust Company, the Madison Safe Deposit Company, the Lincoln Trust Company, and a Trustee of the United States Trust Company and Washington Trust Company.
