Joseph Harrison was an art collector, served on the board of Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art, self-taught engineer and partner of Garrett, Eastwick and Co., Pennsylvania manufacturers of locomotive engines.
Harrison lent work to The Universal Exhibition held in Paris, 1867.
Some of the artwork in Harrison's collection were by Gilbert Stuart, Benjamin West, and James McNeill Whistler in his collection.
