titleEdgar Degas letters, 1879-ca. 1901.
repositoryThe Getty Research Institute
descriptionMost of the letters are undated. The published ones are addressed to Pissarro, about the illustrated journal Le Jour et la Nuit which Degas planned to publish with him and Mary Cassatt [1880]; to Rouart, complaining that he cannot work on the painting for Ephrussi because of the dark skies in Paris [1880]; to a man who offended both him and a dear friend, acknowledging his excuses; to Bartholomé, about his decision to go to Brussels for the last show of Salammbô [1890]; to De Valernes, about his 600 Km. trip in a tilbury with Bartholomé from the Côte d’Or to Paris [1890]; to Bartholomé, commenting on their last meeting [1891]; to a lady, announcing the death of his younger brother Achille [1895]; to Susanne Valadon, asking for her news [1896]; to [Georges?] Charpentier, expressing condolences on his mother’s death.

The six letters presumably unpublished are rather short. Degas sends a fan painted in "genre camaieu" to the dealer Beugniet, asking for FF200; to a lady, cancelling a dinner engagement because of a "petite solennité" at Gauguin’s; to Bartholomé, joking about the company he will share in the theater box he reserved for him [1892]; to Braquaval, cancelling the day he planned to spend in the country at his friend’s place (1896); to a lady, sending detailed information about transportation means to St. Germain and the name of the person to contact if she is looking for a house. A letter sent to Braquaval perhaps in 1900-1901 ends with a typical sentence of Degas: "Travaillez bien, il n’y a vraiment que ça."

Biographical or Historical Notes:
French painter, lithographer and sculptor.

Notes:
Seven letters of this collection were published in the 1945 Grasset edition. One of them (no. 192) is an abbreviated version of a letter announcing to various friends the death of Degas’ younger brother, Achille. The same letters appear in the English version of the Grasset edition published in Oxford, 1947, with the addition of a short note to Susanne Valadon (no. 212). A condolence letter to [Georges ?] Charpentier on the death of his mother (n.d.) is partially reproduced in Denys Sutton’s monograph of 1986.
