titleJohn N. Ringling Records of Julius Böhler
repositoryThe John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art Library
descriptionThe John N. Ringling Records of Julius W. Böhler (1925–1948) document Böhler’s role as art dealer, advisor, and confidant to John Ringling. The bulk of the records (1926–1930) focus on Ringling’s acquisition of fine art and antiquities, detailing purchases, sale negotiations, conservation, and logistics. From 1929–1931, materials address the opening of Ringling’s museum, including draft catalog descriptions and artist biographies. Later correspondence (1930–1936) covers the sale of two artworks and minimal exchanges with Ringling’s estate. In 1947, Böhler was invited to Sarasota to assess the museum’s condition and advise on a collection catalog, documented through reports and correspondence. His 1948 essay reflects on his collaboration with Ringling in building the museum and assembling the collection.
