James Augustus Suydam was an art collector, patron and artist. He bequeathed his entire art collection to the National Academy in 1865.
Suydam’s collection included work by John F. Kensett, Asher B. Durand, Frederic Edwin Church, Sanford R. Gifford, Eastman Johnson, Albert Flamm, Jasper Cropsey, Andreas Achenbach, Thomas Hicks, George Henry Boughton, John George Brown Benjamin Champney, William P. W. Dana, Édouard Frère, William Hart, Daniel Huntington, Miner Kellogg, George Cochran Lambdin, Louis Lang, Evariste Vital Luminais, Louis Rémy Mignot, Jules Achille Noël, William Trost Richards, Paul Seignac, Aaron Draper Shattuck, and Worthington Whittredge.
